Providing sustainable and healthier product choices

We now have a workstream looking at how we can help our customers operate more sustainably, and working with our suppliers to help us offer innovative solutions to our customers. This group launched in August 2018 so we look forward to updating you with their progress.

Small and medium-sized enterprises

We recognise that SMEs are a key driver for economic growth, innovation, employment and social integration.

We know that giving SMEs the opportunity to trade with our customers is important. We understand that SMEs need a different level of support from Bidfood, and we are committed to cooperating with them.

Here are some examples of how we have worked together with SMEs to add their great products to our range:

Supporting regional suppliers

We’ve been working with Scottish business such as First Milk and Cobbs Bakery for many years, supplying their delicious products to our customers. We caught up with Rory Cameron, MD, who explained our partnership and growth over the years which now sees us supplying over four regions in England and Scotland, with plans to grow this over the coming months.

“We work with many local businesses across the country; it’s an important part of our offering and we find that customers love the stories behind these regional brands.” Rory Cameron, Managing Director, Cobbs Bakery

Just Bee Honey Water

We’re working with our supplier Just Bee Honey Water as part of our “To bee or not to bee” engagement campaign. Just Bee, a family business devoted to saving bees, supported our spring sustainability coordinator workshops by donating wildflower seeds to help create bee-friendly local habitats. Just Bee also donate to British bee charities and give away free packets of wildflower seeds – available from their website: www.justbeedrinks.co.uk/seeds.

“It’s really important for us to support honeybees as they are vital, not just for honey but for our wider environment too! We rely on bees and other pollinators for 1 in every 3 mouthfuls of food we eat!” Joe Harper, Co-founder of Just Bee Honey Water

Delphis Eco cleaning products – green products, green packaging

Delphis Eco is a company that sells plant-based cleaning products through the Bidfood network. The chemistry of their products is designed to be as green as it can possibly be and have the least possible impact on the environment and the user. But Delphis Eco have also gone an extra step – by making sure that all of their packaging is from recycled plastic.

Their CEO Mark Jankovich says that:

‘The plastics problem is huge – the UK uses 38.5 million plastic bottles each day. With so many plastic bottles that have already been manufactured, there is absolutely no need to make any virgin plastic. We should simply be repurposing everything that has already been made. ‘

Jankovich says he asks customers: ‘‘Are you doing as much as you can to be as sustainable as you can? And if not, make a change. It’s important.’
